Pressing Ahead

Ash & Lacy Pressings Ltd strengthens the Ash and Lacy group of companies position as a leading supplier of fine hole perforated metal and to offer our customers even more in the way of “Total Solutions”.

Ash & Lacy Pressings Ltd strengthens the Ash and Lacy group of companies position as a leading supplier of fine hole perforated metal and to offer our customers even more in the way of “Total Solutions”.

From components for general engineering through to the highest specification finished product, the expansion into finished product opened up a whole new area of opportunity for growth and came as a result of listening to our customers needs. Now after a significant investment in people and machinery, and with a healthy order book in place, we are delighted to see Ash and Lacy Pressings Ltd trading again as a going concern.

Manufacturing of high quality presswork and assemblies dates back to the late 1980’s when the Ash & Lacy Group acquired Hill Brothers Ltd and changed its name to Ash & Lacy Pressings Ltd. The company operated as a division of Ash & Lacy Perforators Ltd until 2000 when the Ash & Lacy Group was bought by Hill & Smith Holdings plc.

Our pressing division works with materials ranging from metal to plastic, processes from blanking to assembly and finishing with all operations under one roof – we pride ourselves on product and process development that truly delivers cost savings.

Now you can create a unique focal point for your business, home or garden. Vision Living can custom design a stunning piece of metal art for interiors or gardens based on an image or idea you have.

Vision Living is a unique service allowing customers to include their personal touch on interior and garden based designs. Unlike common perforated sheets, which usually have a uniform perforation pattern, Vision Art allows you to create a customised perforation pattern based on your favourite picture or company logo which is first processed on a computer and then transferred to the sheet of material.

The image is created by using different sizes of hole, which also effects the shade of the image on the metal. The actual detail is determined by the pitch or spacing between the holes and for added effect, Artificial lights behind the sheet contribute significantly to changing the appearance of the patterns and images.

If you need further information, or unsure on a design, our team of specialists will be able to suggest ideas that may be suitable for the effect or style you require. You can also visit our website: www.vision-living.co.uk

Spectacular Kitchen Garden Enclosure Project Uses Vision Art

The new £9.7 million Kitchen Garden Enclosure development at Cambridge’s Wellcome Trust Conference Centre, designed by Abell Nepp, features Ash & Lacy perforated panels that incorporate a complex wildlife illustration.

The new £9.7 million Kitchen Garden Enclosure development at Cambridge’s Welcome Trust Conference Centre, designed by Abell Nepp, features Ash & Lacy perforated panels that incorporate a complex wildlife illustration.

In conjunction with main contractor RG Carter and ourselves, Ash & Lacy Building Systems created a bespoke pattern of perforated holes which, when installed, created an illustration called ‘The Tree of Life’.

Several separate panel operations were involved, from perforating, curving, powder coating, to installation of the black fabric material behind the perforations whilst ensuring the panels stayed together and remained rigid.

The panels were originally designed at a 3.9m width. However the number of required perforations removing a high percentage of material, raised fragility, damage in transit and on site concerns. Ash & Lacy Building Systems therefore worked with the client and redeveloped the panels at a reduced size of 1.95m long.

The project consisted of approx. 289 panels, each with its own bespoke perforated pattern. Panels were individually and sequentially marked to ensure easy and accurate installation to the desired pattern.

Ash & Lacy Building Systems liaised closely with Ash & Lacy Perforators to devise an accurate production program issued to RG Carter. This ensured the smooth running of the project and, crucially, completion on time.

Apprenticeships - Building For The Future

Following the successful launch of the Ash & Lacy Apprenticeship Program, we are looking to safeguard the future of the business by recruiting more young people onto the scheme during 2016.

Following the successful launch of the Ash & Lacy Apprenticeship Program, we are looking to safeguard the future of the business by recruiting more young people onto the scheme during 2016.

Like most manufacturing companies, Ash & Lacy has an ageing work force, and finding employees with the kind of skills needed has proved to be difficult according to Steve Hewins, Maintenance Manager for Ash & Lacy.

“In the interests of safeguarding the future of Ash & Lacy we needed to look at ways of plugging the “skills gap”, commented Steve. “So in partnership with Sandwell Training Association, we recruited our first two apprentices, confident that they could be developed to make positive contributions to the business and ‘develop the technical know-how’ to become constructive members of the team”.

We currently have two apprentices being trained in our maintenance department and both are due to finish their qualifications later this year. Mitch will gain his level 3 NVQ in Mechanical Engineering and Tool Making, with Shaun gaining his level 3 NVQ in Maintenance and Mechanical Engineering. Both have commented that through their apprenticeships they have taken a solid step towards a career in Mechanical Engineering; and of course with Ash & Lacy.

Over 150 miles of perforated speaker grilles and 10,000 precision high grade aerospace parts produced each year.

Over 150 miles of perforated speaker grilles and 10,000 precision high grade aerospace parts produced each year.

This was the theme of the Ash & Lacy stand and the Advanced Engineering UK Show; the UK’s largest annual advanced engineering trade show and conference. The Automotive and Aerospace industries are of real strategic importance to the Ash & Lacy business so it was a great opportunity to meet with visiting engineering and procurement decision makers from OEMs and top tier organisations.

The stand was designed to showcase our expertise in those key areas with a strong message of “Its In Our DNA”, and the innovative backdrop certainly generated some interest resulting in a number of new and exciting opportunities for Ash & Lacy.
