Four of Ash & Lacy’s top athletes joined together to form the Smethwick Flyers and have completed Race the Sun 2012. On 1st September David Nock, Emma Pearson, Andy Schubert and Mick Tomkinson set off at sunrise to complete the cycling, climbing and canoeing challenge. Race the Sun is an annual event arranged by Action Medical Research, the leading UK medical charity dedicated to helping children and babies. For 60 years Action Medical Research have contributed to some of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent history beginning with the polio vaccine, which has eradicated new cases of the disease in the UK.
The Race the sun challenge is set in the magnificent setting of the Lake District. The teams start at sunrise and cycle 50 miles (80kms), hike to the summit of England’s second highest mountain, Helvellyn, at 3,116ft (950m) and canoe a 2.5 mile (4kms) course on Thirlmere Lake…all before sunset!
See below for photos of the team at the top of Helvellyn and in training.
